CDP vendors love to tout real-time capabilities. "Update customer profiles in milliseconds!" The pitch is compelling. But real-time infrastructure is more expensive, more complex, and more fragile than batch processing. Before paying the premium, understand what in your CDP actually needs real-time processing — and what doesn't.

What Genuinely Needs to Be Real-Time

Behavioral Event Routing (Always Real-Time)

When a user fires an event ("Add to Cart," "Checkout Started"), the downstream trigger must be immediate:

  • Cart abandonment sequence: email should be triggered within 30–60 minutes while the cart is still top of mind
  • Trial activation milestone: sales alert should fire when a user completes a key step, not the next morning
  • In-app message trigger: show a relevant modal when a user reaches a specific behavior, not 24 hours later

For event-triggered workflows, real-time CDP event routing is justified. The conversion impact of a 1-hour delay vs. a 24-hour delay in abandonment emails can be 30–50% in recovery rate.

Identity Resolution (Near-Real-Time)

When a user identifies themselves (login, form submission), their historical anonymous session should be merged into their profile quickly — minutes, not days. This ensures that email campaigns launched shortly after identification include their pre-identification behavioral history.

Live Personalization (Real-Time)

If your website shows personalized content based on CDP profile data (e.g., "recommended for you" sections updated as the user browses), you need real-time profile reads. This is technically demanding but valid for ecommerce and media use cases.

What Can Be Batch (and Should Be)

Computed Traits (Daily Batch Is Fine)

Calculating LTV, engagement score, churn probability, product usage summaries — these run in your data warehouse as scheduled queries. Running them daily and syncing results back to the CDP is almost always sufficient. The user's LTV doesn't meaningfully change hour-to-hour.

Audience Syncing to Ad Platforms (Daily)

Syncing Customer Match lists to Google Ads and Meta Custom Audiences daily is sufficient for most use cases. Google processes uploaded lists over 24–48 hours anyway, making hourly or real-time uploads provide no meaningful benefit. The audience update cadence doesn't need to match the event frequency.

CRM Enrichment (Daily)

Pushing updated customer traits and behavioral summaries to Salesforce or HubSpot can run as a daily batch job. Sales teams review their pipelines daily; real-time CRM updates don't meaningfully change how they work.

Data Warehouse Replication (Minutes to Hours)

Copying CDP events to your data warehouse for analytics can tolerate 15–60 minute delays without impacting business decisions. Analysts looking at yesterday's data aren't affected by a 30-minute pipeline lag.

The Cost Difference

Real-time infrastructure requires streaming architectures (Kafka, Kinesis, PubSub) that are significantly more expensive and complex than batch processing (scheduled SQL queries, cron jobs).

If your use cases are primarily batch-compatible (audience syncing, CRM enrichment, computed traits), a warehouse-first composable CDP with Reverse ETL may be far more cost-effective than a traditional CDP optimized for real-time streaming.
