Attribution Modelling with CDP Data

Why CDPs Enable Better Attribution

Attribution — the process of assigning credit for conversions to marketing touchpoints — is only as accurate as the customer journey data it's based on. Most attribution tools work from incomplete data: Google Analytics sees only sessions with GA cookies, Meta attribution sees only sessions with Meta pixels, and neither sees in-store interactions or email-driven behaviour.

A CDP captures the complete first-party customer journey — all touchpoints in one unified profile — which is the foundation for accurate attribution.

The CDP Attribution Architecture

CDP-based attribution works as follows:

  1. CDP captures every touchpoint as an event with UTM parameters, referrer, channel, and campaign data
  2. CDP's identity resolution links anonymous touchpoints to the identified user at the point of conversion
  3. The complete journey — from first anonymous visit through conversion — is available as a sequence of events per user
  4. This event data is exported to BigQuery where attribution models are run as SQL queries

Attribution Models in BigQuery

With CDP event data in BigQuery, you can implement any attribution model:

  • Last touch: 100% credit to the last touchpoint before conversion
  • First touch: 100% credit to the first touchpoint that initiated the journey
  • Linear: Equal credit across all touchpoints
  • Time decay: More credit to touchpoints closer to conversion
  • Data-driven: Machine learning model trained on your own conversion data (requires significant volume)

Cross-Channel Attribution

CDPs uniquely enable cross-channel attribution because all channel events — paid search clicks, email clicks, social interactions, direct visits, in-app events — are captured in one system under one identity. This is what GA4 and individual ad platform attribution cannot do: they each have partial visibility. The CDP sees everything.
