Moving Beyond Funnels to Journey Analysis
Funnel analysis tells you how many users complete a predefined path. Journey analysis tells you what paths users actually take — including the ones you didn't design or expect. These unexpected paths often reveal workarounds, confusion points, and alternative use cases that product teams didn't know existed.
Path Analysis in Product Analytics Tools
Mixpanel's "Flows" and Amplitude's "Pathfinder" both visualize the events users complete after a starting event. Example: after "Sign Up Completed," what did users do next? Path analysis shows the distribution of next steps — the most common, second most common, and where users dropped off.
Key questions path analysis answers:
- What do users do immediately after signup? (onboarding behaviour)
- What path do retained users take vs. churned users?
- Are users reaching Feature X directly or via a convoluted path that suggests they couldn't find it easily?
- What happens right before users churn? (last session behaviour)
Building User Segments from Journey Data
Group users by the journey they take. Power users who follow an ideal path to activation and then use 5+ features are different from users who sign up, try one feature, and disappear. Create segments based on journey milestones — users who completed steps 1-3 of activation, users who reached step 4, users who completed full activation.
Analyse these segments separately: what are their retention rates? Which plans do they upgrade to? This connects journey behaviour to business outcomes.
Combining Quantitative Journey Data with Qualitative Research
Path analysis tells you what users do — session replay tools (FullStory, Hotjar) tell you why. When path analysis reveals an unexpected drop-off step, use session replay to watch actual recordings of users at that step. This often reveals the specific UI confusion or missing information causing the drop-off in seconds — far faster than running a survey.
Infrastructure for Journey Analysis
Journey analysis requires complete event tracking across all product surfaces. If mobile and web events don't share the same user identity, you can't see cross-platform journeys. Our product analytics service implements cross-platform user identification and consistent event naming as the foundation for reliable journey analysis. Data can also be exported to BigQuery for SQL-based path analysis at scale.
