What Is Quality Score and Why Does It Matter?
Quality Score is Google's 1–10 rating of the quality and relevance of your keywords and ads. It's not just a vanity metric — it directly affects your Ad Rank and therefore your cost per click and ad position.
The relationship is powerful: advertisers with Quality Score 10 pay roughly 50% less per click than advertisers with Quality Score 5 for the same ad position. Improving Quality Score is one of the highest-ROI activities in Google Ads management.
The Three Components of Quality Score
1. Expected Click-Through Rate (CTR)
How likely your ad is to be clicked based on historical performance. Google compares your CTR to other advertisers for the same keyword. Factors that influence expected CTR:
- Ad copy relevance to the keyword
- Use of ad extensions (sitelinks, callouts, call extensions)
- Headlines that match search intent
- Historical account CTR
2. Ad Relevance
How well your ad copy matches the search intent of the keyword. This is heavily influenced by tight ad group structure (see our Google Ads management approach). When your keywords, ad group theme, and ad copy are tightly aligned, Ad Relevance improves.
Common issue: an ad group called "Analytics Services" with keywords ranging from "ga4 setup" to "bigquery consulting" will have low Ad Relevance because no single ad can be equally relevant to all those terms.
3. Landing Page Experience
Google evaluates your landing page for:
- Relevance: Does the page content match the ad and keyword?
- Transparency: Clear information about your business, privacy policy, contact info
- Navigability: Easy-to-use page with clear paths forward
- Mobile experience: Fast loading, properly formatted on mobile
- Low bounce rate signals: Users staying and engaging vs. bouncing immediately
Strategies to Improve Quality Score
Restructure Ad Groups for Tighter Themes
The single most impactful change. Create tighter ad groups where every keyword shares a common theme, and write ads that speak directly to that theme. This improves both Expected CTR and Ad Relevance simultaneously.
Include Keywords in Ad Headlines
Dynamic Keyword Insertion (DKI) can help, but writing genuine headlines that include your target keyword naturally is more effective. Google bolds keywords in ad copy that match the search query, improving visual prominence and CTR.
Use All Available Ad Extensions
Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call extensions, and location extensions all increase the visual footprint of your ad and provide more click options. Ads with extensions consistently outperform those without.
Improve Landing Page Speed
Page speed is a direct ranking factor for Landing Page Experience. A page that loads in 2 seconds will score significantly higher than one that takes 5+ seconds. Use Google's PageSpeed Insights and prioritize mobile performance.
Align Landing Pages to Ad Copy
If your ad says "Free GA4 Audit," the landing page should prominently feature the GA4 audit offer — not a generic services page. Message continuity between ad and landing page reduces bounce rates and signals relevance to Google.
Quality Score and Conversion Tracking
Improving Quality Score is only valuable if you're measuring the conversions that result. Without proper conversion tracking setup, you won't know which quality improvements are driving actual business results.
We recommend connecting Google Ads to GA4 and using GTM to fire conversion tags accurately. If your tracking has gaps, use our conversion tracking fix service to address them before doubling down on optimization.
Realistic Quality Score Benchmarks
- 8–10: Excellent — you're getting a cost discount vs. competitors
- 5–7: Average — room for improvement, particularly on landing page
- 1–4: Poor — significant work needed on relevance or landing pages
Don't obsess over Quality Score as an end in itself — it's an input to Ad Rank, not the final goal. Focus on the three underlying factors, and Quality Score will follow. Contact us for a Quality Score audit of your account.
