How to Run a Marketing Analytics Audit: Our Complete Methodology

Why Analytics Audits Matter

Analytics implementations degrade over time. Events that were tracking correctly in 2022 may fire incorrectly after a website redesign. Conversion goals set up for an old product flow still appear as conversions even though they no longer reflect real purchases. A new CMS was deployed without updating the GTM triggers.

An analytics audit is a systematic review of your entire measurement stack to identify gaps, errors, and misconfigurations. Our marketing analytics team runs this audit at the start of every engagement. This is our methodology.

Audit Layer 1: Business Requirements Review (1–2 hours)

Before checking any data, understand what the business needs to measure:

  • What are the current business and marketing KPIs?
  • What decisions are made from analytics data?
  • What reports do stakeholders rely on?
  • What questions can't currently be answered?

This context determines what "good" analytics looks like for this specific business — and which gaps are critical vs. nice-to-have.

Audit Layer 2: GA4 Account Configuration

Review the GA4 property configuration:

  • Data retention settings: Set to maximum (14 months for free, 50 months for GA4 360)
  • Conversion events: Are the right events marked as conversions? Are there ghost conversions from old flows?
  • Enhanced measurement settings: What's enabled? Any unwanted auto-events causing data inflation?
  • Cross-domain tracking: If multiple domains, is cross-domain configured? Incorrect setup causes session fragmentation.
  • Filters: IP exclusions for office traffic? Bot filtering enabled?
  • User permissions: Who has access? Is access principle of least privilege?

Audit Layer 3: GTM Implementation

  • GTM container on all pages: Check header and footer placements; verify no pages are missing the container
  • Tag inventory: List all tags and their purpose. Identify orphaned tags (firing but no clear purpose)
  • Trigger accuracy: Spot-check key triggers in Preview mode. Does the conversion trigger fire only on genuine conversions?
  • Variable configuration: Check custom JavaScript variables for errors or outdated selectors
  • Published container version: Is there a large gap between draft changes and published container? Changes not published = not tracking

Audit Layer 4: Conversion Tracking Verification

The most critical layer — verify each conversion event is firing correctly:

  • Complete actual conversions (form submissions, checkout completions) in a test environment
  • Verify events appear in GA4 DebugView in real time
  • Check parameter values: Is revenue parameter populated correctly? Is transaction_id unique per purchase?
  • Cross-reference with conversion data: Does GA4 conversion count match your order management system's count for the same period? Significant discrepancies indicate tracking gaps.

Audit Layer 5: Channel Integration

  • Google Ads: Is conversion import configured from GA4? Are all conversion actions imported?
  • Meta Ads: Is the Meta Pixel firing correctly? Is CAPI configured for server-side events?
  • Email platform: Are UTM parameters on all links? Is email attribution visible in GA4?
  • Attribution: What model is GA4 using? Is it configured appropriately for your sales cycle?

Audit Output: Prioritized Issue List

Categorize findings by severity:

  • Critical: Data loss or data corruption (conversion not tracking, revenue value wrong) — fix immediately
  • High: Missing data that affects key decisions (channel attribution broken, mobile conversion not tracking)
  • Medium: Gaps or inconsistencies that affect reporting quality
  • Low: Nice-to-have improvements
