What Competitive Analytics Covers
Competitive analytics uses publicly available and platform-specific data to understand how your digital marketing performance compares to competitors. It cannot reveal competitors' exact analytics data (which is private), but it can reveal competitive position, keyword overlap, share of search, and market trends that inform your marketing strategy.
Share of Search as a Brand Metric
Share of search — your brand's search volume as a percentage of total category search volume — is one of the most reliable proxies for market share. Brands with growing share of search tend to grow market share. Monitor brand search volume via Google Search Console and category keyword volumes via Google Trends or keyword research tools. A rising share of search indicates successful brand building.
Google Ads Auction Insights
Google Ads provides Auction Insights data showing: for the same auctions you participated in, which competitors also appeared, their impression share vs. yours, and their relative position. This is platform-reported competitive data available in your own Google Ads account — no third-party tool required. Monitor monthly for competitive pressure signals: a competitor's impression share growing at your expense indicates increased competitive spend or quality score advantage.
SEO Competitive Analysis Tools
Tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, and Moz provide keyword overlap analysis (which keywords both you and competitors rank for), traffic estimates for competitor domains, and backlink profiles. Use these to identify:
- Keywords where competitors rank and you don't — content gap analysis
- Keywords where you rank below competitors — optimisation opportunities
- New content topics competitors are publishing — strategic direction signals
Benchmarking in GA4
GA4 has limited competitive benchmarking (industry benchmark comparisons were removed). Instead, benchmark against your own historical performance — comparing current month vs. prior year gives seasonality-adjusted performance context. Our marketing analytics consulting includes competitive analysis frameworks as part of the strategic analytics layer.
