Email + CDP: Powering Lifecycle Campaigns with Behavioral Data

Email Without Behavioral Data Is Batch-and-Blast

Most email programs send the same newsletter to everyone on the same day at the same time. Some segment by basic demographics. But the real performance unlock comes from behaviorally-triggered emails — messages sent based on what users actually did (or didn't do).

A CDP is the behavioral data layer that makes this possible. It collects every user action across all channels and can trigger the right email at the right moment. Our CDP implementation team configures email platform integrations as one of the first activation destinations in every project.

How CDP → Email Integration Works

The CDP sends two types of data to your email platform:

  1. Identify calls: User profile updates (email, name, plan, LTV) that enrich contact records and enable segmentation
  2. Track events: Behavioral events (Order Completed, Feature Activated, Trial Started) that trigger automated sequences

Your email platform receives these as real-time webhooks and can immediately trigger campaigns based on them.

The Essential Lifecycle Campaign Library

Welcome Series

Triggered by: CDP "User Registered" event

Sequence: Day 0 (confirmation), Day 1 (getting started guide), Day 3 (feature spotlight), Day 7 (check-in if no activity). CDP provides product usage data to adapt each email — if Day 3 shows the user already used the feature, the Day 3 email skips the feature intro and goes deeper.

Activation Campaign

Triggered by: User in "registered but not activated" segment (registered > 3 days, activation event not fired)

CDP data used: Which steps they've completed (helps personalize "where you left off" messaging), what feature they last used

Cart Abandonment

Triggered by: CDP "Cart Abandoned" event (cart event fired, no purchase event within 1 hour)

CDP data used: Specific products in cart (enables dynamic product images), customer LTV tier (higher-value customers get more aggressive recovery offer)

Post-Purchase Sequence

Triggered by: CDP "Order Completed" event

Sequence: Confirmation (Day 0), Onboarding tips (Day 3), Review request (Day 14), Cross-sell based on purchase category (Day 30)

Churn Prevention

Triggered by: CDP computed trait "engagement_score" drops below threshold, or "days_since_last_login" exceeds 14

CDP data used: Last feature used (personalize re-engagement message), plan tier (retention offer calibrated to plan value)

Win-Back

Triggered by: CDP audience "lapsed_customer" (last purchase > 90 days, previously purchased 2+ times)

CDP data used: Previous purchase categories (show "new arrivals in categories you love"), total past spend (calibrate incentive offer)

Measuring Email + CDP Performance

Track these metrics to evaluate behaviorally-triggered email performance:

  • Open rate and CTR vs. batch newsletter baseline
  • Revenue per email sent (most important for ecommerce)
  • Conversion rate of triggered sequences vs. generic campaigns
  • Cart recovery rate (abandoned cart email sequence)

Connect email platform data to GA4 via UTM parameters and BigQuery for cross-channel attribution of email-assisted conversions.
