Two Tools, Two Different Questions
Web analytics (like Google Analytics 4) and product analytics (like Mixpanel or Amplitude) answer different questions. Using the wrong tool for the question leads to either missing data or unnecessary complexity. Understanding the difference helps you invest in the right tooling for your team's actual needs.
Web Analytics: Traffic and Acquisition
Web analytics answers: where does traffic come from, what pages do visitors view, and which channels drive conversions? Its primary unit is the session — a collection of interactions during a single visit. GA4 is session-based at heart, even though it uses an event model.
Web analytics is excellent for:
- Understanding acquisition channels (organic search, paid ads, social, referral)
- Measuring landing page performance
- Tracking marketing-attributed conversions
- SEO performance via Search Console integration
- Ad campaign optimisation
Product Analytics: User Behaviour and Retention
Product analytics answers: what do logged-in users actually do in your product over time, and what predicts whether they stay or leave? Its primary unit is the user — a persistent identity tracked across sessions and devices.
Product analytics is excellent for:
- Measuring feature adoption within your product
- Analysing retention cohorts by signup date, plan, or acquisition source
- Building activation funnels for logged-in user workflows
- Segmenting users by behaviour to personalise communications
- A/B testing product features (not marketing pages)
Where They Overlap
GA4's user-based model means it can do some product analytics tasks — it has retention reports, path analysis, and user explorer. For many early-stage products, GA4 is sufficient before investing in a dedicated product analytics tool.
The threshold: if you have more than 10,000 monthly active users, need detailed behavioural cohorts, or have a product team doing dedicated product analytics work, the specialized tools pay for themselves in time saved and insight quality.
The Best-of-Both Approach
Most mature companies run both. GA4 for marketing and acquisition analytics (free, already connected to Google Ads). A product analytics tool for in-product behaviour and retention. Data from both flows into BigQuery for unified analysis. Our product analytics service helps teams choose and implement the right combination for their stage.
