Google Ads Competitive Analysis: Understanding Your Auction Landscape

Why Competitive Intelligence Matters in Paid Search

Google Ads is an auction. Every time your ad competes for a placement, you're competing against specific competitors. Understanding who those competitors are, how aggressively they're bidding, and where they outperform you is essential intelligence for any serious Google Ads strategy.

Our Google Ads management team conducts competitive analysis at account launch and quarterly thereafter — the competitive landscape shifts, and strategies that worked 6 months ago may need adjustment.

Auction Insights Report

Google's Auction Insights report shows how your campaigns perform relative to competitors in the same auctions. Available at the campaign, ad group, or keyword level. Key metrics:

  • Impression Share: Your share of available auctions vs. competitor
  • Overlap Rate: How often a competitor's ad appeared alongside yours
  • Position Above Rate: How often a competitor's ad appeared above yours when both appeared
  • Top of Page Rate: How often each advertiser appeared at the top of page (above organic results)
  • Absolute Top of Page Rate: How often each advertiser appeared in position #1
  • Outranking Share: How often your ad outranked a competitor's (or they didn't show)

The Auction Insights report is Google's native competitive lens — use it first. Compare your impression share to top competitors and identify gaps.

Third-Party Competitive Research Tools

SEMrush and Ahrefs

Show estimated keyword lists, estimated ad spend, and ad copy history for any domain. Useful for:

  • Discovering what keywords competitors bid on that you don't
  • Analyzing competitor ad copy and offer messaging
  • Estimating competitor budget ranges
  • Finding competitor landing pages for landing page benchmarking

SpyFu

Specializes in PPC competitive intelligence, showing historical keyword data and ad copy variations over time. Good for seeing how competitor strategies have evolved.

Analyzing Competitor Ad Copy

Collect and analyze competitor ads to understand:

  • What offers they're leading with (price, guarantee, speed, features)
  • What calls-to-action they use
  • What extensions they're using
  • What they're NOT offering that you could highlight as a differentiator

Don't copy competitors — use their ads to identify white space where you can differentiate. If all competitors lead with "Google Certified," that's table stakes. Find what they're not saying and make that your headline.

Competitor Keyword Targeting Strategy

Competitor Name Bidding

Bidding on competitor brand names can capture users actively evaluating alternatives. Rules:

  • Don't use competitor brand names in your ad copy (trademark violation risk)
  • Lead with your strongest differentiator — why should they choose you instead?
  • Expect lower Quality Scores (lower ad relevance to a competitor's name) → higher CPCs
  • Target only competitors where you genuinely win head-to-head comparisons

Competitor Gap Keywords

Use tools to find keywords competitors rank for in paid search that you currently don't. These represent demand you're not capturing. Evaluate each gap keyword for intent quality and competitiveness before adding to your campaigns.

Share of Voice Analysis

Share of Voice (SOV) in paid search is measured by Impression Share — what percentage of total available impressions you're capturing for your keyword set. Tracking SOV over time reveals:

  • Are you gaining or losing ground to specific competitors?
  • When competitors increase spend (seasonal campaigns, product launches), does your share drop?
  • Are you maintaining position while costs increase?

Build a monthly SOV tracking dashboard in Looker Studio pulling from Google Ads Auction Insights data, linked with your conversion tracking data for context. Contact our team to set up competitive monitoring for your Google Ads account.
