Three Different Tools, Three Different Jobs
CDP, CRM, and DMP are three distinct categories of customer data technology that are frequently confused with each other. They serve different purposes, contain different types of data, and are used by different teams for different decisions. Understanding the differences prevents expensive misallocations of budget and expectations.
CRM: Customer Relationship Management
A CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive) is primarily a sales and customer success tool. It tracks:
- Known contacts with verified identities (name, company, email)
- Sales pipeline stages and deal values
- Communication history (calls, emails, meetings)
- Manual notes and tasks from sales representatives
CRMs require someone to manually add or import data. They don't automatically capture behavioural data from your website or product. A CRM knows who your customers are and what deals you've had with them — it doesn't know how they use your product.
DMP: Data Management Platform
A DMP (Oracle BlueKai, Salesforce DMP) is an advertising technology tool. It stores anonymous audience segments built from third-party cookie data and demographic data purchased from data brokers. DMPs are used to target display advertising to audience segments. They do not store personally identifiable information and profiles are typically retained for only 90 days.
Third-party cookie deprecation has significantly reduced DMP value. Many DMPs are being replaced by first-party data strategies powered by CDPs.
CDP: Customer Data Platform
A CDP (Segment, RudderStack, mParticle) is a data infrastructure tool. It captures first-party behavioural data automatically (every event a user triggers on your website or app), resolves identities across devices and touchpoints, and creates persistent profiles available to all downstream systems in real time. Unlike CRMs, CDPs work with anonymous data from the moment of first touch. Unlike DMPs, CDP profiles are based on your own first-party data and are persistent.
Which Do You Need?
Most marketing teams need a CRM. Growing digital businesses benefit from adding a CDP when they have multiple data sources that need unification. DMPs are declining in relevance due to cookie deprecation — first-party data strategies through CDPs are replacing them. Our CDP implementation service can help you assess your current stack and design the right data architecture for your business.
