Why GA4 Configuration Drifts
A well-configured GA4 property does not stay well-configured automatically. Team members change settings, developers deploy code changes that alter event parameters, UTM conventions drift across campaigns, and new platform features require configuration updates. Regular auditing prevents months of data quality problems going unnoticed.
Monthly Checks (30-Minute Review)
- Session and conversion count sanity check: compare this month's sessions and conversions to last month. A sudden 20%+ drop or increase warrants investigation before it becomes a long-term trend.
- Check for new "(not set)" in key dimensions: any new "(not set)" appearing in source/medium, campaign, or landing page suggests a new tracking gap.
- Google Ads conversion status: in Google Ads, check that all imported GA4 conversions still show "Recording" status. A conversion that goes from Recording to "No recent conversions" may indicate a tracking break.
- Review internal traffic: if your team has grown or offices changed, update the internal IP filter.
Quarterly Checks (2-3 Hour Review)
- Conversion event validation: complete each primary conversion action (form submit, checkout, etc.) and verify in DebugView that the event fires with correct parameter values.
- UTM hygiene audit: pull Source/Medium report and look for inconsistencies (google/cpc vs Google/CPC vs GOOGLE/cpc). Clean up UTM templates and campaign naming conventions.
- Custom dimension data quality: check that custom dimensions have no unexpected "(not set)" rates. If a custom dimension is 80% (not set), the event is not consistently sending that parameter.
- Audience review: check GA4 audiences that feed Google Ads. Verify audience sizes are as expected and that exclusion audiences (e.g. converted users) are working.
- BigQuery export verification: if enabled, confirm the daily export tables are populating correctly in BigQuery.
- Referral exclusion review: add any new third-party checkout or partner domains that are appearing as referral sources.
Annual Review (Full Audit)
- Measurement plan alignment: compare current tracking to the original measurement plan. Have business objectives changed? Are there events you are tracking but never using? Events you need but are not tracking?
- Conversion value review: are the estimated lead values you assigned to Key Events still accurate? Update them if your average deal value has changed.
- GA4 feature audit: GA4 adds new features frequently. Review what is new and whether any new feature provides value (predictive audiences, new attribution models, new exploration types).
- Data retention check: confirm data retention is still set to 14 months and consider whether longer-term data needs have emerged that require BigQuery.
- Permission audit: review who has access to your GA4 property at each permission level. Remove access for people who have left the company or no longer need it.
- Cross-property review: if you have multiple GA4 properties, ensure they are all using consistent event naming, consistent attribution windows, and consistent conversion event configurations.
When to Do an Unplanned Audit
Outside the regular schedule, investigate immediately when:
- GA4 conversion count drops 20%+ week-over-week without a business explanation
- Smart Bidding performance degrades significantly after a stable period
- A website redesign, CMS migration, or checkout platform change was deployed
- A new GTM container was published by another team member
- A new domain or subdomain was added to the site
Summary
GA4 data quality requires ongoing maintenance — monthly sanity checks, quarterly conversion validation and UTM audits, and an annual full review against your measurement plan. Build these reviews into your marketing calendar and assign clear ownership to prevent the "nobody noticed it was broken" scenario that affects more GA4 properties than most teams realise.
