From Data to Action: 10 Ecommerce Reports That Drive Revenue Decisions

Analytics Should Drive Decisions

Most ecommerce teams look at analytics weekly and feel informed. Fewer actually make specific decisions based on what they see. The difference is reporting structure: the reports that drive decisions are those built around a specific question with a clear action if the answer is "X".

These 10 reports connect GA4 ecommerce data to specific, revenue-impacting actions.

Report 1: Checkout Funnel by Device (Weekly)

What it answers: where in checkout do mobile users abandon, compared to desktop?

How to build: Funnel Exploration (add_to_cart → begin_checkout → add_shipping_info → purchase) with Device Category breakdown.

Action trigger: if mobile checkout abandonment at add_shipping_info is 20%+ higher than desktop, investigate mobile shipping UX specifically.

Report 2: Landing Page Revenue by Channel (Monthly)

What it answers: which landing pages drive the most revenue from each acquisition channel?

How to build: Free-form Exploration. Rows: Landing Page + Channel Group. Metrics: Sessions, Purchases, Revenue, Conversion Rate.

Action trigger: landing pages with high paid search traffic but low conversion rate are wasting budget — test new page designs or send paid traffic to better-converting pages.

Report 3: Product List CTR and Revenue Attribution (Monthly)

What it answers: which product lists (category pages, carousels, recommendations) drive the most revenue?

How to build: Ecommerce Purchases report + Item list name dimension.

Action trigger: if the "Customers Also Bought" widget drives 15% of revenue but only 5% of product views, expand it to more product pages.

Report 4: Revenue by Coupon Code (Monthly)

What it answers: which discount campaigns drive the most revenue (after discount)?

How to build: Ecommerce Purchases + Order coupon dimension.

Action trigger: coupons with high transaction count but very low revenue per transaction are too generous — reduce discount depth.

Report 5: New vs Returning Customer Revenue Split (Monthly)

What it answers: what percentage of revenue comes from first-time buyers vs returning customers?

How to build: Ecommerce Purchases + New/Returning dimension.

Action trigger: if 90%+ of revenue is from returning customers and new customer acquisition is minimal, marketing mix may be too retention-focused — increase acquisition investment.

Report 6: Search Query Revenue Attribution (Monthly)

What it answers: which internal search queries lead to purchases vs exits?

How to build: Funnel Exploration. Step 1: view_search_results. Step 2: purchase. Breakdown by search_term.

Action trigger: high-volume searches with 0% purchase rate → either product gap or poor search results for that term.

Report 7: Cart Abandonment by Product (Weekly)

What it answers: which products are added to cart but not purchased most often?

How to build: two Exploration tables: add_to_cart by item_id, purchase by item_id. Calculate abandonment rate by item in a spreadsheet or BigQuery.

Action trigger: products with high add-to-cart but low purchase rate have a checkout barrier — check if they are frequently out of stock, have price objections, or size/variant issues.

Report 8: Promotion Click-Through and Revenue (Campaign end)

What it answers: did the promotional banner pay off in revenue?

How to build: Ecommerce Purchases + Item promotion name dimension.

Action trigger: if a 20%-off promotion banner generated 500 clicks but only 5 purchases, the promotion is attracting browsers who are not converting — reconsider the offer or the creative.

Report 9: High-Margin Product Performance (Monthly)

What it answers: are high-margin products getting sufficient traffic and converting?

How to build: Ecommerce Purchases filtered by item-scoped custom dimension margin_tier = "high". Metrics: Item views, Items purchased, Revenue.

Action trigger: if high-margin products have 50% fewer views than average, increase their prominence in navigation, search, and paid campaigns.

Report 10: Channel ROAS (Weekly for Paid, Monthly for Organic)

What it answers: which channels generate the most revenue per pound spent?

How to build: import GA4 conversions into Google Ads and compare campaign ROAS. For organic, compare GA4 revenue by organic search vs SEO investment cost.

Action trigger: any paid channel with ROAS below your breakeven threshold for 3+ consecutive weeks requires either bidding adjustment or creative refresh.

Summary

These 10 reports all share one characteristic: each has a pre-defined action trigger. Analytics without action triggers generates reports that get read and forgotten. Define the threshold at which you act before running each report — then run it, and act when the threshold is crossed.
