Audiences as the Product of Pixel Data
Beyond conversion tracking, marketing pixels serve a second critical function: building advertising audiences. Every user who visits your website (and has not blocked the pixel) is identified by each platform's pixel and can be added to audience segments for retargeting. These pixel-based audiences are often the highest-performing audience type in advertising because they target people who have already expressed interest in your business.
Core Audience Segments to Build
Website visitor audiences (all platforms):
- All website visitors (broad, used for brand awareness retargeting)
- Product/category page visitors (interest-based retargeting)
- Cart abandoners (visitors to /cart who didn't reach /confirmation)
- Checkout abandoners (visitors to /checkout who didn't reach /confirmation)
- Past purchasers (visitors to /order-confirmation — target for repeat purchase campaigns)
Value-based segmentation:
- High-value purchasers (filtered by order value above a threshold)
- Multi-purchasers (visited confirmation page multiple times)
Audience Membership Duration
Choose durations based on your product's consideration cycle:
- Cart abandoners: 7-14 days (urgency window)
- Product viewers: 30 days (still in research phase)
- All visitors: 60-90 days (brand recency)
- Past purchasers: 180 days (upsell window)
Exclusion Audiences
As important as inclusion: exclude people who have already converted from conversion-focused campaigns. If someone already purchased your product, showing them "add to cart" ads wastes impressions. Create a "Recent Purchasers" audience and exclude it from your conversion campaigns.
Lookalike and Similar Audiences
All major platforms (Meta, Google, TikTok) can create "lookalike" or "similar" audiences — new users who behaviorally resemble your best audience segments:
- Meta: Lookalike Audience from your Past Purchasers pixel audience
- Google: Similar segments from your remarketing lists
- TikTok: Lookalike audiences from pixel-based audiences or Customer Files
These prospecting audiences expand reach while maintaining relevance, using pixel data as the seed.
Summary
Marketing pixels build the audience segments that power retargeting campaigns. Core segments: all visitors, product viewers, cart abandoners, checkout abandoners, and past purchasers. Set membership durations to match consideration cycles. Always create exclusion audiences (recent purchasers) for conversion campaigns. Use high-value customer segments as seeds for lookalike/similar audience prospecting. Audience building is a compounding advantage — the longer your pixel has been running, the larger and more refined your audiences become.
