Google Ads Remarketing Architecture
Google Ads remarketing uses the Conversion Linker tag (managed via GTM) to set a Google-specific cookie that identifies users who have clicked your ads (via the gclid parameter). This cookie also adds users to your remarketing audience lists. The Conversion Linker is distinct from the Google Ads conversion tag — both are needed for complete remarketing and conversion tracking.
Step 1: Add the Google Ads Conversion Linker Tag
The Conversion Linker is the foundation of both conversion tracking and remarketing:
- GTM → New Tag → Tag Type: Conversion Linker
- Trigger: All Pages
- Name: "Google Ads - Conversion Linker"
This tag reads the gclid from the URL when a user arrives from a Google ad and stores it in a first-party cookie (\_gcl_aw). It also reads the cookie on subsequent pages to maintain attribution.
Step 2: Create Remarketing Audiences in Google Ads
In Google Ads → Tools → Audience Manager → + New Audience → Website Visitors. Create audience segments:
- All website visitors (broad retargeting)
- Visitors to specific pages (e.g. product pages, pricing page)
- Cart abandoners (visited cart page but did not visit confirmation page)
- Past purchasers (visited confirmation page)
Each segment uses URL rules to define membership: "URL contains /cart" for cart visitors, etc.
Step 3: Set Membership Duration
Choose how long users stay in the audience after qualifying:
- All visitors: 30-90 days (depending on purchase cycle)
- Cart abandoners: 14-30 days (time-sensitive retargeting)
- Past purchasers: 90-180 days (for upsell/repeat purchase campaigns)
Audience Size Requirements
Google Ads requires minimum audience sizes before campaigns can run:
- Google Display Network: 100 users
- Google Search (RLSA): 1,000 users
- YouTube: 1,000 users
If your audience shows fewer than the minimum, the campaign cannot serve until the audience grows.
Verification
To verify the Conversion Linker is working and building audiences:
- GTM Preview Mode → browse to homepage → Conversion Linker tag should appear in Tags Fired
- Google Ads → Tools → Audience Manager → your audience → should show growing membership over 2-7 days after publishing
Summary
Google Ads remarketing requires: the Conversion Linker tag (All Pages trigger in GTM) to set the gclid cookie, audience definitions in Google Ads (URL-based segments for visitors, cart abandoners, purchasers), and appropriate membership durations. Audiences need minimum membership (100 for Display, 1,000 for Search) before campaigns can serve. The Conversion Linker is the single most important tag for both conversion attribution and audience building — verify it fires on all pages.
