Google Ads Negative Keywords: How to Eliminate Wasted Ad Spend

What Are Negative Keywords?

Negative keywords prevent your ads from showing for irrelevant searches. While positive keywords tell Google when to show your ad, negative keywords tell Google when NOT to. Done well, negative keywords are one of the fastest ways to cut waste and improve account efficiency.

In accounts our Google Ads team inherits, we typically find 20–40% of ad spend going to irrelevant searches that could be blocked with a robust negative keyword strategy.

Why Negative Keywords Matter

Every irrelevant click has two costs:

  1. Direct cost: You pay for a click that will never convert
  2. Indirect cost: Low Quality Score from poor ad relevance, raising your CPCs across the account

Eliminating irrelevant searches improves CTR (higher percentage of clicks from relevant searches), which improves Quality Score, which lowers CPCs for everyone in the account.

Categories of Negative Keywords

Intent-Based Negatives

Words indicating non-buying intent:

  • Research/learning: free, tutorial, course, guide, how to, what is, training
  • DIY: template, yourself, own, build your own
  • Job seeking: job, jobs, career, careers, hiring, salary, work for
  • Academic: essay, thesis, example, definition, case study (non-commercial)

Competitor Brand Negatives

Unless you're running explicit competitor campaigns, add all competitor brand names as negatives to your non-brand campaigns. You don't want to pay for clicks from people searching for a specific competitor by name.

Irrelevant Industry Negatives

Many keywords exist in multiple industries. "Analytics" could mean sports analytics, business intelligence, data science, web analytics. Add terms that clarify the irrelevant categories.

Product/Service Exclusions

Exclude things you don't sell. If you offer enterprise software but keep getting searches for "free software," add "free" as a negative. If you sell B2B services but get consumer searches, add consumer intent terms.

Negative Keyword Match Types

Negative keywords have their own match types:

  • Negative Exact [-keyword]: Blocks only that exact search query
  • Negative Phrase [-"keyword"]: Blocks any search containing that phrase
  • Negative Broad [-keyword]: Blocks searches containing all terms in any order

Unlike regular keywords, negative broad match doesn't expand to synonyms. It blocks searches containing all those words. Negative phrase is most commonly used — it blocks the phrase in any longer search but doesn't over-block like negative exact can in some cases.

Negative Keyword Lists

Google Ads allows shared negative keyword lists that apply across multiple campaigns. This is a major time-saver for accounts with many campaigns. Create a master "Global Negatives" list with universal exclusions, then apply it to all campaigns automatically.

The Search Terms Report: Your Negative Keyword Gold Mine

The Search Terms report (under Keywords → Search Terms) shows every query that triggered your ads. Review this weekly, especially for broad and phrase match campaigns. For each irrelevant search term you find, add it as a negative.

Key filters to apply in the Search Terms report:

  • Zero conversions + cost above your average CPA
  • High impressions with CTR below 1%
  • Any query containing your universal negative keyword categories

Negative Keywords and Tracking Integration

To properly identify which searches are wasting budget (and which aren't), you need accurate conversion data at the keyword level. This requires properly configured Google Ads conversion tracking and ideally GA4 integration for deeper behavioral signals.

Without conversion data, you're guessing which search terms are "irrelevant." With it, you can make data-driven decisions about which query patterns to exclude. Our conversion tracking fix service ensures your conversion data is reliable enough to support these decisions.
