Expanding Google Shopping to 8 European Markets: 285% International Revenue Growth
Health Brand: Multi-Country Shopping Expansion
📌 Introduction
A UK-based health and wellness brand with strong domestic Google Shopping performance wanted to expand into European markets. Previous attempts to run international Shopping campaigns had failed due to feed configuration errors, policy violations in specific markets, and poor localisation. Our multi-country Merchant Center setup delivered approved product listings in 8 European countries and £140,000 in incremental monthly international Shopping revenue within 5 months.
❗ The Problem
The client had tried to expand to Germany and France twice previously using their UK feed translated by Google Translate. Both attempts resulted in product disapprovals, policy violations related to pricing and regulatory compliance, and ultimately account flags. They had abandoned international Shopping and were leaving significant revenue on the table in markets where they knew their products sold well through other channels.
🔍 Identifying the Causes
International GMC setup requires market-specific compliance that a simple feed translation cannot achieve. The previous attempts failed due to: incorrect currency and VAT treatment for each market, missing legally required product information for specific EU product categories, image and description policy differences between markets, country-specific prohibited content rules affecting some supplement products, shipping settings that didn't reflect actual carrier capabilities in each country, and using a single feed for multiple markets rather than market-specific supplemental feeds.
⚠️ Consequences for the Business
Failed expansion attempts had created compliance flags in the UK account that required resolution. The business was capturing less than 5% of its potential European Shopping revenue. Competitors had established Shopping presence in these markets during the 18 months the client had been unable to expand.
✅ Solution
We designed a compliant, scalable multi-country GMC architecture. Account structure: Created a Multi-Client Account (MCA) with country-specific sub-accounts for each target market (UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria). Feed architecture: Primary UK feed in English used as the base. Country-specific supplemental feeds applied localised titles, descriptions, prices in local currency including correct VAT rates, and market-specific regulatory attributes. Compliance review: Each product category reviewed against EU and country-specific requirements. Products adjusted for each market's prohibited/restricted content rules. Full regulatory compliance documentation prepared. Shipping: Carrier capabilities verified for each country. Country-specific shipping templates built reflecting actual delivery times and costs. Performance Max campaigns: Country-specific PMax campaigns with localised ad assets and audience signals from any existing customer data in each market.
📈 Results
Month 1: All 8 country accounts fully approved, 94% product approval rate across all markets. Month 2: Shopping campaigns live in all markets, £23,000 international revenue. Month 3: Optimisation phase, international revenue £67,000. Month 5: International Shopping revenue reached £140,000/month. Combined international ROAS of 4.2x. Germany became the largest international market at £42,000/month. Total international revenue in the first 12 months: £1.1M — 285% growth from zero.
🏁 Conclusion
International Google Shopping expansion requires market-specific compliance architecture, not just translation. By building proper country-specific feed infrastructure and ensuring full regulatory compliance from day one, we transformed repeated expansion failures into a sustainable multi-market revenue stream worth over £1M in the first year.
💡 Key Takeaways
Multi-country Shopping requires dedicated country-specific feeds — a single translated feed doesn't meet market compliance requirements. EU regulatory compliance varies by product category and country — legal review before expansion prevents costly violations. A Multi-Client Account structure enables efficient management of multiple country accounts. Market-specific audience data, even if limited initially, accelerates algorithm learning in new markets.
