Why Mobile CRO Is Different
Mobile users have different intent, different context, and different interaction capabilities than desktop users. They're often on the move, using a touch interface, on a slower connection, and with less patience for slow-loading or difficult-to-use pages. Most CRO tools and principles were developed for desktop — applying them directly to mobile without mobile-specific consideration produces suboptimal results.
Mobile-Specific Conversion Barriers
- Tiny tap targets: CTAs, links, and form fields smaller than 44x44 pixels cause mis-taps and frustration. Mobile users physically cannot accurately tap elements that are too small.
- Zoom-required content: Text or layouts requiring zoom signals content not designed for mobile. Users zoom when they can't read default content size.
- Off-screen CTAs: CTAs visible on desktop that are cut off or require horizontal scrolling on mobile — invisible conversion opportunities
- Form keyboard issues: Number fields that open the alphabetic keyboard (missing inputmode="numeric" attribute), causing extra taps to switch
- Auto-zoom on form tap: Font-size below 16px in form inputs causes iOS to zoom in — disrupting the form experience
Mobile-First CRO Priorities
- Page speed: Every additional second of mobile load time significantly increases bounce rate. Mobile users on LTE have different speed expectations than desktop users on WiFi. Optimise images, use lazy loading, and minimise blocking scripts.
- Thumb zone design: The bottom third of a mobile screen is the easiest thumb reach zone. Place primary CTAs within thumb reach — not only at the top of the page.
- Sticky CTAs: A sticky bottom bar with the primary CTA is often the highest-converting mobile element — always in thumb reach regardless of scroll position.
- Simplified forms: Mobile form completion is more laborious than desktop. Cut form fields to the absolute minimum for mobile users.
Mobile Session Analysis
Always review mobile and desktop heatmaps and session recordings separately. Mobile sessions on checkout pages are particularly revealing — scroll maps often show users not reaching the payment button at all. Our CRO service always analyses mobile performance separately from desktop as part of every audit.
