Exit Intent: A Second Chance at Conversion
Exit intent technology detects when a user's cursor is moving toward the browser's back button or address bar (on desktop) and triggers an overlay before they leave. Used well, it recovers visitors who would otherwise abandon without converting. Used poorly, it interrupts user experience and trains users to dismiss popups without reading them.
When Exit Intent Works
Exit intent is most effective when:
- The user has demonstrated intent (spent time on a product page, viewed pricing, added to cart but not purchased)
- The offer in the popup provides genuine value (a discount, a free resource, an offer to answer questions)
- The popup is shown infrequently (not on every visit — once per session at most, ideally once per user per week)
- The dismiss is easy (one clear close button, keyboard escape key works)
High-Converting Exit Intent Offers by Type
- Ecommerce: "Before you go — take 10% off your first order." Discount code captures purchase-intent users who needed a final nudge. Include a timer (real scarcity) for additional urgency.
- Lead generation: "Download the free guide to [topic you were just reading about]." Offer relevance to the page content the user was viewing.
- SaaS: "Not ready to sign up? Start a free trial with no credit card required." Reduces the commitment barrier for hesitant users.
- Service businesses: "Have questions? Chat with a specialist." Opens a conversation for users who are interested but need more information.
Testing Exit Intent Performance
Measure exit intent ROI properly: the metric is incremental conversions from users who would not have converted without the popup, not total conversions from users who saw the popup. A/B test exit intent on vs. off for 50% of your traffic. Track conversion rates for both groups. The difference is the true incremental lift.
Watch for cannibalization: if users who see the popup wait for the popup discount before purchasing (i.e., they would have bought anyway), you're reducing margin without adding conversions. Check purchase timing patterns. Our CRO service designs and tests exit intent strategies for ecommerce and lead generation sites. Contact us to discuss implementation.
