Landing Page Conversion Optimization: What Actually Works

Landing Page Conversion Rates: Context First

Landing page conversion rates vary enormously by industry, traffic source, and offer. A 2% conversion rate for a high-ticket B2B SaaS demo request is excellent. A 2% conversion rate for a free trial signup is poor. Before optimising, establish what "good" looks like for your specific context, traffic quality, and offer — then measure against that benchmark, not industry averages.

Above-the-Fold Elements Matter Most

The elements visible before a user scrolls — the hero section — determine whether they continue reading or leave. These have the highest impact on conversion rate:

  • Headline: Should communicate the specific outcome the user will get, not just what the product is. "Increase your conversion rate by 30%" outperforms "CRO platform for growth teams"
  • Subheadline: One sentence that adds context — who it's for and how it works
  • Primary CTA: Above the fold, high contrast, action-oriented copy ("Start Free Trial" vs "Sign Up")
  • Social proof signal: Logo bar or trust badge visible immediately — signals legitimacy before the user has read anything

Common Landing Page Conversion Problems

  • Headline-offer mismatch: The ad said "Free SEO Audit" but the landing page says "Explore Our SEO Services" — users feel deceived and leave
  • Too many CTAs: Multiple competing actions (Schedule Demo, Start Trial, Contact Sales, Watch Video) cause decision paralysis — one primary CTA per page
  • Form above benefits: Asking for information before explaining value — users don't know why they should give you their email
  • No mobile optimization: CTA cut off on mobile, text too small, form fields don't work on touch devices

What to Test First

Prioritise tests in this order: (1) headline copy — highest impact, easiest to implement; (2) CTA copy and placement; (3) form length reduction; (4) social proof type and placement. Don't test button colour until you've exhausted higher-impact variables.

Our CRO service runs structured landing page audits using heatmap data and session recordings to identify the specific elements causing conversion loss on your pages. Contact us to schedule an audit.
