A/B testing requires sufficient traffic to reach statistical significance within a reasonable timeframe. If your site gets 500 visitors per month, a properly powered A/B test on your main conversion page could take 18 months to reach conclusive results — by which time your business, product, and market have changed.

Traffic Thresholds for Standard A/B Testing
Use this rough guide to understand testing feasibility:

Strategy 1: Qualitative Research First
For low-traffic sites, the research phase becomes more important, not less. Since you can't run many tests, each test must be higher-confidence. This means investing more in qualitative research to ensure you're testing the right things.
- Session recordings: With low traffic, you can watch a higher percentage of sessions directly
- User interviews: Talk to 5–10 target customers about their decision-making process
- Customer surveys via email to existing customers
- Heatmaps: Even 200 sessions generate useful heatmaps
Strategy 2: Focus on High-Traffic Pages Only
Even low-traffic sites often have traffic concentration — a handful of pages get most of the visits. Focus exclusively on these pages for testing.
Check in GA4 which pages have the most sessions. Your homepage and 2–3 service/product pages probably get 60–70% of all traffic. Test only on those pages.
Strategy 3: Combine Changes Into Multivariate Tests (Carefully)
Standard A/B tests change one element to attribute results clearly. When traffic is low, it can make sense to make multiple changes simultaneously in a redesigned variant — accepting that you won't know which change drove the result, but you'll learn whether the overall direction is better.
This is directional testing rather than causal testing. The learning is "this set of changes works" rather than "this specific element works."
Strategy 4: Shorten Tests With Bayesian Methods
Bayesian testing frameworks (available in some A/B testing tools) can reach useful conclusions with smaller samples than traditional frequentist testing, at the cost of less certainty. For low-traffic sites, "80% confident" is often actionable even if 95% is not achievable in a reasonable timeframe.
Strategy 5: Implement High-Confidence Changes Without Testing
Some CRO changes have such strong evidence from industry research and best practices that they don't need testing on your specific site:
- Enable guest checkout (if not enabled)
- Add security badge near payment form
- Show return policy prominently
- Fix rage-clicked broken buttons
- Make CTA visible without scrolling
Implement these without A/B testing and move your limited traffic budget toward higher-uncertainty tests.
