What Looker Studio Templates Are

Looker Studio templates are pre-built report structures you can copy and connect to your own data sources. Instead of building every chart from scratch, you start with a template that has the right layout, metrics, and calculated fields already defined — then swap in your data and adjust styling to match your brand.

Finding Templates

The Looker Studio template gallery (lookerstudio.google.com/gallery) has hundreds of templates from Google and third-party providers. Search by platform (Google Ads, GA4, Search Console) or by use case (ecommerce, B2B, social media). Google provides official templates for all of their own products that are a good starting point.

How to Use a Template

1. Open a template from the gallery
2. Click "Use template" in the top right
3. Looker Studio prompts you to select your own data sources to replace the template's sample sources
4. Match each data source in the template to your own equivalent
5. The template reopens with your data

Charts that used the template's sample data now show your numbers. Calculated fields and layout are preserved.

Customizing Templates

After applying your data, review every calculated field. Template calculated fields are based on the template creator's assumptions about metric names — if your data source uses different field names, the calculations will show errors. Update each field formula to match your actual data source field names.

Remove charts that don't apply to your business. Add calculated fields for KPIs specific to your model. Apply your brand colors using the report theme editor (Edit → Theme and layout).

Creating Your Own Templates

Any Looker Studio report can be a template. Build a report with all the charts, calculated fields, and layout you want. Replace the real data sources with Google's sample data sources (so the template works for anyone regardless of what GA4 property they have). Then share the template link and others can copy it and connect their own sources.
