GTM Zones and Multiple Containers: When One Container Is Not Enough

GTM Zones and Multiple Containers: When One Container Is Not Enough

When a Single GTM Container Creates Problems

A standard Google Tag Manager account has one container per website, and that is sufficient for most sites. But some scenarios genuinely require either multiple containers or GTM Zones — a feature available on GTM 360 that creates isolated tag zones within a single page.

Common scenarios where a single container becomes limiting:

  • A large enterprise website where different teams manage different sections and need tag governance isolation
  • A multi-brand platform where different brands share a domain but need separate tracking configurations
  • A third-party widget or embed that needs its own tracking independent of the host page's container
  • A website that loads significant third-party iframes or embedded tools that need their own tag management

Option 1: Multiple Containers on One Page

GTM allows multiple containers on the same page. Each container loads independently via its own snippet. This is technically straightforward: install both head and body snippets for each container on the same page templates.

Use cases for multiple containers:

  • A site-wide "master" container managed by a central team, plus a section-specific container managed by a local team (e.g. a blog section with its own analytics setup)
  • A vendor-managed container for a third-party service alongside your own company container

Cautions:

  • Both containers run on every page — every tag in both containers fires if trigger conditions are met
  • Data layer events pushed by one container are visible to tags in the other container — coordinate carefully to avoid interference
  • Managing access and governance across two separate containers can be complex

Option 2: GTM Zones (360 Feature)

GTM Zones is a feature exclusive to GTM 360 (the paid enterprise version). A Zone is an isolated section of a page defined by a CSS selector — only tags within the Zone's container apply to DOM elements within that CSS selector boundary.

Example: a Zone defined by the CSS selector #partner-content only applies to the content inside that div. A tag in the Zone cannot access DOM elements outside the Zone, and the Zone cannot be affected by trigger events from outside its boundary.

Use cases for Zones:

  • A media publisher that shows third-party advertiser content and wants advertisers to manage their own tracking within their ad unit without accessing the publisher's full page data
  • An enterprise platform where a business unit operates a widget embedded in the main corporate site and needs isolated tag management
  • A SaaS product that embeds into customer websites and ships with its own tracking, sandboxed from the host page's tracking

Zone security model: the parent container owner approves the Zone container and defines its CSS selector boundaries. The Zone container operator cannot deploy tags that access data outside the Zone's scope. This is the key governance advantage over simply running two separate containers — scope isolation is enforced technically.

When You Don't Need Multiple Containers

The most common reason teams think they need multiple containers is poor organisation of a single container. A well-organised container with clear naming conventions, workspaces, and user permissions can serve multiple teams without needing separate containers. Before adding complexity with multiple containers, audit whether your current container can be reorganised to serve your needs.

Choosing Between the Options

If you need tag governance isolation (one team cannot see or interfere with another's tags) → GTM Zones (360) is the right tool.

If you need separate containers for practical reasons (different deployment cycles, different agency partners) → multiple containers on the same page.

If you mainly need better organisation → workspaces and user permissions in a single container.

Summary

Multiple containers and GTM Zones solve real problems for complex enterprise setups. For the majority of websites, a well-managed single container with clear workspaces and access controls is the right approach. GTM Zones in particular require GTM 360, which carries a significant cost — validate the use case carefully before recommending it.
