What User Flow Analysis Reveals
User flow analysis maps the paths visitors take through your website — which pages they visit in sequence, where they exit, and what percentage of users reach important conversion points. It transforms aggregate traffic data into a visual understanding of the visitor journey, revealing where the biggest conversion opportunities lie.
User Flow in GA4
In Google Analytics 4, use the "Path exploration" report (Explore → Path exploration) to visualise user flows. Start from a specific starting point (e.g., homepage, or a specific landing page) and see where users go next. Each node shows event counts and the percentage of users who proceeded vs. exited.
Key flows to analyse:
- From entry page to conversion: How many steps do users take, and where is the highest exit rate?
- From product page to checkout: Are users going to checkout directly or bouncing between multiple product pages?
- From pricing page: What do users do after viewing pricing — do they go to the demo page, the contact page, or exit?
Identifying High-Exit Pages
High exit rate on a page within the conversion flow is a signal worth investigating. It doesn't always mean the page is bad — some pages (pricing pages, contact pages) naturally have high exit rates because users make their decision and leave. But high exit rates on intermediate pages (product category pages, feature pages) often indicate friction or missing information.
When you find a high-exit page in the flow, follow up with heatmap data and session recordings for that specific page to understand what's causing the exit.
Entry Page Performance
Different landing pages attract different user intent levels. Users landing on blog content have lower purchase intent than users landing directly on product pages. Analyse conversion rates by entry page — this shows which traffic acquisition channels bring high-intent traffic (and which bring low-intent traffic that inflates your bounce rate without converting).
