What Are Rage Clicks?
A rage click is a rapid series of clicks in the same spot, generated by a frustrated user. Users rage-click when an element they expect to be interactive isn't — a button that looks clickable but isn't linked, an image they expect to enlarge that does nothing, or a form that appears to have submitted but hasn't responded. Rage clicks are some of the clearest signals that your UI is creating user frustration at a specific point.
Tools That Detect Rage Clicks
- Microsoft Clarity (free): Automatically detects and tags sessions containing rage clicks. The Clarity dashboard shows a count of rage click sessions and lets you filter recordings to show only sessions with rage clicks. This is the fastest way to find UX problems at no cost.
- FullStory: Detects rage clicks and categorises them by element, frequency, and page. Enterprise-grade signal detection with advanced search.
- Hotjar: Detects rage clicks in recordings (look for the rage click indicator on playback timeline).
How to Investigate Rage Clicks
- Open your session recording tool and filter to sessions with rage clicks
- Watch the rage click segment — the tool shows you the moment it occurred
- Identify the specific element being clicked. Common culprits: images users expect to link somewhere, text formatted like a link that isn't one, grayed-out buttons that appear enabled, dropdown arrows with no response
- Group rage clicks by element — if 200 sessions show rage clicks on the same product image, that's a clear fix (make it clickable)
Rage Clicks vs Dead Clicks
Dead clicks are single clicks on non-interactive elements — less frustrated than rage clicks, but indicating the same underlying problem. Microsoft Clarity tracks both. Dead clicks often reveal elements that users expect to be links: product images, section headings, icon graphics. Add appropriate links or remove the visual interactivity cues.
Impact on Conversion Rate
Users who rage-click are users who encountered a barrier. Many will abandon rather than find another path. Fixing rage-click-generating elements removes specific conversion barriers and typically produces immediate uplift in conversion rates without requiring an A/B test. Our CRO service includes a rage click audit as part of every behaviour analytics engagement.
