Behavior Analytics 101: Heatmaps, Session Recordings, and Funnels Explained

What Is Behavior Analytics?

Quantitative analytics (Google Analytics, GA4) tells you what happened: 1,000 users visited your pricing page and 20 converted. Behavior analytics tells you why: users scroll past the pricing table without reading it, rage-click the broken "Get Started" button, and abandon the page when they can't find the FAQ.

Behavior analytics tools visualize how users actually interact with your website — where they click, how far they scroll, where they get confused — giving you the qualitative insight to complement quantitative data.

Our behavior analytics and CRO service combines both layers to build hypotheses that actually improve conversion rates.

Heatmaps

Heatmaps visualize aggregated user behavior across hundreds or thousands of sessions, showing patterns that individual session recordings can't reveal.

Click Maps

Show where users click on a page. High-value insights:

  • Are users clicking on non-clickable elements (thinking they're buttons)? → Consider making them clickable or removing the visual cue
  • Are they ignoring your primary CTA and clicking secondary elements? → CTA may need redesign
  • Are users clicking the footer navigation instead of the main CTA? → Page hierarchy may be confusing

Move Maps (Mouse Tracking)

Show where users move their cursor, which correlates with eye movement on desktop. Useful for understanding reading patterns and identifying areas users find most visually engaging.

Scroll Maps

Show how far down the page users scroll. Critical insight: if your primary CTA is below where 60% of users stop scrolling, you're invisible to the majority of visitors. Scroll maps reveal the "fold" for your actual audience.

Session Recordings

Session recordings capture individual user sessions as video — mouse movements, clicks, scrolling, form interactions, and page navigation. Unlike heatmaps (which show aggregate patterns), recordings show individual user stories.

High-value use cases:

  • Rage click analysis: Watch users frantically clicking elements that don't respond as expected
  • Form abandonment: See exactly which field causes users to give up and leave
  • Navigation confusion: Watch users going back and forth between pages, unable to find what they need
  • Mobile experience issues: See how your site performs on small screens with real users

The key to session recordings is systematic review, not random watching. Filter for high-intent users (visited pricing page) or frustrated users (rage clicks, quick backs) and review 50+ sessions to identify patterns.

Conversion Funnels

Funnel analysis tracks the percentage of users who complete each step in a defined conversion flow. Where drop-offs occur, behavioral tools help explain why.

Example funnel for ecommerce: Product Page → Add to Cart → Checkout → Payment → Confirmation

If 60% of users who add to cart abandon at the payment step, session recordings of that specific step reveal whether it's a UX issue (confusing form), a trust issue (no security badges), or a price issue (unexpected shipping cost at checkout).

Combine GA4 funnel exploration (for quantitative drop-off data) with behavior tool recordings (for qualitative explanation of why) to diagnose and fix conversion leaks.

Getting Started

The easiest entry point is Microsoft Clarity (free) — it provides heatmaps and session recordings with no data limits. For more advanced features (form analytics, advanced filtering, funnel recordings), Hotjar or FullStory offer paid tiers.

Implementation is typically a single GTM tag. Data starts accumulating immediately. Our CRO team conducts systematic behavior analytics reviews to extract actionable insights. Contact us for a behavior analytics audit of your key landing pages.
