What Leadership Needs from a Marketing Dashboard
A marketing analytics dashboard for senior leadership needs to answer three questions: Are we hitting our revenue and growth targets? Is marketing spend being deployed efficiently? Where are the biggest opportunities or risks? Everything else is operational detail that belongs in team-level dashboards, not the leadership view.
The One-Page Leadership View
Design the primary page with no scrolling. Four top-level scorecards: Total Revenue (vs. target), Marketing Spend (vs. budget), Blended ROAS, and New Customers Acquired. Below that, two charts: revenue trend vs. target over time, and channel performance comparison table.
Every metric must show a comparison: actual vs. prior period and actual vs. target. Leadership needs context, not just numbers.
Data Sources for a Leadership Dashboard
- Revenue data: From CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot) or order management system — not from marketing analytics tools, which only have attributed revenue, not actual revenue
- Marketing spend: From finance or direct API pulls from each ad platform
- Channel-level performance: From GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager
- Customer acquisition data: From CRM — newly created customers by channel, using lead source data
The challenge: these sources rarely agree on revenue because each uses different attribution. Define upfront which system is the "revenue of record" for the dashboard, and use that consistently.
Building in Looker Studio
Use Looker Studio with BigQuery as the data layer. BigQuery normalises data from all sources and resolves attribution conflicts before Looker Studio visualises it. This is more complex to set up but produces a single reliable truth rather than a patchwork of conflicting platform numbers.
