Why Single-Touch Attribution Fails
A typical B2B customer journey might include: a display ad impression, an organic blog post visit, a Google search resulting in a paid click, a retargeting ad, an email click, and finally a branded Google search converting. Last-click attribution gives 100% of credit to branded search. First-click gives 100% to display. Both are wrong — and both produce systematically bad budget allocation decisions if acted upon.
Multi-touch attribution distributes credit across all touchpoints that played a role in the journey, producing a more accurate picture of which marketing investments are genuinely contributing.
Rule-Based Multi-Touch Models
- Linear: Equal credit to all touchpoints (6 touches = 1/6 each). Simple, but doesn't differentiate touchpoint value.
- Time-decay: Exponentially more credit to touchpoints closer to conversion. Reasonable for short-consideration products, but undervalues awareness.
- Position-based / U-shaped: 40% first touch, 40% last touch, 20% shared equally across middle touches. Balances initiation and conversion credit.
- W-shaped: Also credits the lead creation touchpoint: 30% first, 30% lead creation, 30% last, 10% shared middle. Useful for B2B with distinct lead creation events.
Data-Driven Multi-Touch Attribution
GA4's data-driven attribution uses ML to assign credit based on which touchpoints actually improve conversion probability in your data. It compares converting and non-converting paths to identify which touchpoints correlate with conversion. This is more accurate than rule-based models when you have sufficient conversion volume (300+ conversions per month).
