Most businesses don't know their tracking is broken until the damage is done — months of ad spend optimized against inaccurate data, landing pages that seem to convert well but actually don't, or remarketing audiences built on ghost traffic. The frustrating truth is that broken tracking rarely announces itself. It just quietly corrupts every decision you make downstream.
Use this self-diagnosis checklist to identify whether your setup has silent problems right now.
Red Flag #1: Your Conversion Numbers Seem Too Good (or Too Bad)
If your conversion rate looks suspiciously high — say, 15% on an e-commerce store — or implausibly low, the first suspect is always duplicate or missing tracking. Common causes include:
- Conversion tags firing on every page load, not just the thank-you page
- GTM container installed twice (once via GTM snippet, once hardcoded)
- Purchase events firing before payment confirmation
- Form submission events tracking opens instead of completions
Quick test: Complete your own purchase or form submission in a fresh browser with GA4 DebugView open. Count exactly how many conversion events fire. It should be one.
Red Flag #2: Google Ads and GA4 Conversions Never Match
A 10–20% discrepancy between Google Ads and GA4 conversion counts is normal due to attribution model differences. A 50%+ gap means something is structurally wrong. Most likely causes:
- GA4 and Google Ads are tracking different events as conversions
- The Google Ads conversion tag is missing on some pages or payment methods
- Cross-domain tracking isn't set up (users move from your site to a payment portal)
- Ad blockers are stripping client-side tags (server-side tracking solves this)
Red Flag #3: iOS Traffic Shows Zero Conversions
Since Apple's App Tracking Transparency changes, iOS users who decline tracking are invisible to pixel-based systems. If your iOS traffic shows drastically lower conversion rates than Android in GA4, you're not seeing a real behavioral difference — you're seeing a tracking gap. The fix is implementing server-side conversion tracking and Meta's Conversion API, which bypass browser restrictions.
Red Flag #4: Your Remarketing Audiences Are Tiny
If you have 50,000 monthly website visitors but your Google Ads remarketing audience only contains 8,000 users, something is blocking your tags. Common culprits: consent banners blocking all cookies before users accept, ad blockers removing GTM entirely, or the GTM snippet placed incorrectly in the page template. Check your tag coverage rate in GTM's Preview mode against your actual traffic volume.
Red Flag #5: You Can't Answer Basic Questions About Your Funnel
If you don't know the answer to these questions from your analytics, your tracking is incomplete:
- What percentage of users who add to cart complete a purchase?
- Which traffic source drives the highest lifetime value customers?
- At which step do users drop off in your checkout flow?
- What is the average time from first visit to first purchase?
These aren't advanced analytics questions. They're basic business intelligence. If your setup can't answer them, you're flying blind.
Red Flag #6: Nobody Has Audited Your Setup in Over 12 Months
Tracking setups decay. Website redesigns break event listeners. Payment provider changes break cross-domain tracking. GTM container bloat accumulates tags from campaigns that ended two years ago. Platform APIs update their requirements. If your last tracking audit was more than a year ago — or you've never had one — assume there are problems. The question is only how many.
What to Do If You Scored 3 or More Red Flags
A tracking audit is the right next step. A proper audit covers: GA4 configuration review, GTM container audit, conversion accuracy testing across all methods and devices, cross-channel attribution analysis, and consent compliance check. The businesses that invest in getting clean data first consistently outperform those that optimize on dirty data — because they're optimizing reality, not a corrupted mirror of it.
