What Is a Customer Data Platform (CDP)? A Complete Introduction

What Is a Customer Data Platform?

A Customer Data Platform (CDP) is a software system that collects customer data from all sources — website behaviour, mobile app events, CRM records, purchase history, support interactions, email engagement — and unifies it into persistent, individual customer profiles that are accessible to other systems. The defining characteristic of a CDP is that it creates a single, complete view of each customer and makes that view available for marketing, analytics, and personalisation use cases.

Our CDP implementation service helps teams design and deploy this infrastructure correctly from the start.

The Three CDP Capabilities

  1. Data collection: Ingesting events and attributes from every customer touchpoint — website, app, CRM, email, point of sale, call centre, and more
  2. Profile unification: Linking data from different sources to the same individual using identity resolution — connecting the anonymous website visitor to the known email subscriber to the CRM contact
  3. Data activation: Making unified profiles available to downstream systems — sending audience segments to Facebook Ads, triggering personalised emails in Klaviyo, syncing data to your CRM, or sending profiles to a data warehouse like BigQuery

Why CDPs Emerged

Before CDPs, customer data was siloed: your email platform had one view of the customer, your CRM had another, your analytics had a third, and your ad platforms had yet another. Connecting these views required custom integrations that broke frequently and were expensive to maintain. CDPs centralise this data management so each source connects once to the CDP, and the CDP distributes the unified data to all destinations.

Who Benefits from a CDP?

  • Ecommerce businesses: Personalise product recommendations and trigger cart abandonment campaigns using real-time browsing and purchase data
  • B2B SaaS companies: Combine product usage signals with CRM data to score leads and identify expansion opportunities
  • Retail chains: Connect in-store purchase data with online behaviour for a true omnichannel customer view
  • Media and subscription businesses: Predict churn and personalise content based on engagement patterns

CDPs deliver the most value when data from multiple sources needs to be unified before activation. If your data is already clean and unified in one place, you may not need a CDP. Talk to our team to assess whether a CDP is the right investment for your current data maturity level.
