The Cost Question Nobody Answers Directly
One of the most common questions about server-side tracking is: what does it actually cost? The answer depends on which hosting option you choose and how much traffic your tagging server receives. Here is a clear breakdown of real-world costs for the main options.
Option 1: Google Cloud Run
Cloud Run is Google's serverless container platform and the recommended official option for hosting the sGTM server container. You pay per request and per CPU second — no fixed monthly cost, but variable based on traffic.
Typical costs:
- Up to 2 million requests/month: effectively free (within Google Cloud's free tier)
- 2-10 million requests/month: approximately $5-20/month
- 10-50 million requests/month: approximately $20-100/month
- 50+ million requests/month: $100-300+/month
Most small and medium businesses with under 500,000 monthly website visits fall in the 0-$20/month range. Cloud Run scales automatically, requires minimal configuration, and benefits from Google's infrastructure reliability.
Trade-offs: requires a Google Cloud account, basic cloud familiarity, and you are responsible for updates and monitoring (though GTM simplifies this significantly with its built-in auto-update mechanism).
Option 2: Google App Engine
The original Google Cloud deployment option for sGTM. Less recommended now that Cloud Run is available, as Cloud Run is more cost-effective for variable traffic. App Engine uses a minimum-instance model that maintains at least one instance running at all times.
Typical costs:
- Minimum: approximately $50-70/month (always-on instance)
- Higher traffic: $70-200+/month
App Engine is only worth considering if you need guaranteed minimum latency without any cold-start delays — which Cloud Run can sometimes have at very low traffic levels (though this is rarely noticeable in practice).
Option 3: Stape.io (Managed Hosting)
Stape is a managed hosting service specifically for server-side GTM. They handle all infrastructure management, updates, monitoring, and scaling — you just get a tagging server URL.
Pricing tiers (approximate):
- Starter: from approximately $20/month (limited requests)
- Business: from approximately $40-60/month (higher request volume)
- Enterprise: custom pricing
What Stape adds over DIY Cloud Run:
- No cloud infrastructure management required
- Additional features: routing rules, custom domain management, monitoring dashboards
- Faster setup (minutes instead of hours)
- Support included
For agencies and non-technical teams, Stape's simplicity often justifies the cost premium over Cloud Run.
Option 4: Self-Hosted (VPS)
Some advanced users deploy sGTM on a VPS (Virtual Private Server) using a self-managed container setup. This is technically possible but requires Docker, server management, and ongoing maintenance.
Cost: VPS costs from £5-20/month, but with significant setup and maintenance time investment.
Not recommended unless you have strong DevOps expertise and have a specific reason to avoid Google Cloud infrastructure.
Implementation Cost vs Hosting Cost
The hosting cost (£10-100/month) is usually not the largest cost. Professional implementation of server-side tracking — setting up the server container, configuring GA4 and Meta CAPI routing, implementing deduplication, and testing — typically costs £500-2,000 as a one-time setup fee.
Our Server-Side Tracking service includes setup, documentation, and verification.
Summary
For most businesses with under 5 million monthly tagging server requests: Cloud Run at effectively zero hosting cost. For teams that want managed simplicity: Stape at $20-60/month. The implementation cost is where most of the budget goes, and it pays for itself quickly in improved conversion data for ad bidding.
