Ask the Analyst: Answers to the 20 Questions Clients Ask Us Most

The Questions We Answer Every Week

After hundreds of client projects and thousands of hours of analytics work, certain questions come up again and again. This post compiles the 20 questions we hear most often -- with the honest, complete answers we give to clients.

1. Why doesn't my conversion data match between GA4 and Google Ads?

These two platforms count conversions differently. GA4 attributes a conversion to the session in which it occurred. Google Ads attributes it to the last ad click within the conversion window. They also deduplicate differently. Some discrepancy is normal -- more than 20-30% usually indicates a configuration issue worth investigating.

2. Is GA4 really better than Universal Analytics?

For most businesses, yes -- but the transition requires rebuilding your tracking from scratch. GA4's event-based model is more flexible and its BigQuery export is genuinely powerful. The reports are less intuitive for newcomers, but the underlying data model is superior.

3. Do I need server-side tracking?

You need it if: you're spending more than ,000/month on Meta or Google ads and care about attribution accuracy, you have users in ad-blocker-heavy demographics (tech, media, gaming), or you're processing sensitive data that shouldn't touch a browser. For simple lead gen sites with small ad budgets, browser-side tracking is usually sufficient.

4. How do I know if my tracking is broken?

Check these things: open Chrome DevTools Network tab and look for your GA4 measurement ID. Open GTM Preview and verify your key events fire on the right actions. In GA4 DebugView, complete a key user flow and watch events appear in real time. If conversion counts in Google Ads are dropping, check the Conversions column for No recent conversions warnings.

5. Why is my bounce rate suddenly 0% in GA4?

GA4 replaced bounce rate with engagement rate. A session is engaged if it lasts more than 10 seconds, has 2+ pageviews, or includes a conversion event. The inverse of engagement rate is the new bounce rate -- but it's calculated differently than UA's bounce rate, so the numbers aren't comparable.

6. Can Google Ads optimize without conversion data?

Yes, but poorly. Smart Bidding strategies (Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions) require conversion data to function. Without it, they optimize toward clicks -- which is not the same as optimizing toward business outcomes. You should have at least 30 conversions in 30 days before switching to a Smart Bidding strategy.

7. What's the difference between a GA4 event and a conversion?

All conversions are events, but not all events are conversions. An event is any interaction you choose to track (page_view, click, scroll, form_submission). A conversion is an event you've marked as a key business goal in GA4 Admin. Only conversions appear in Google Ads for bidding.

8. Why does GA4 show different numbers than my CRM?

GA4 counts sessions and events. Your CRM counts contacts and deals. They measure different things. GA4 will always show more form submissions than your CRM shows leads -- because GA4 counts every submission event, while your CRM might deduplicate existing contacts or filter spam. A 20-40% difference is normal. More than that warrants investigation.

9. Do I need a cookie banner if I only use Google Analytics?

In the EU/UK/EEA, yes. GA4 collects personal data (IP addresses, device IDs) and sets cookies. Under GDPR, you need a legal basis for this -- either legitimate interest (which is contested for analytics cookies) or consent. The safest approach is a proper consent banner with Consent Mode v2 configured correctly.

10. What's Consent Mode v2 and do I need it?

Consent Mode v2 is Google's framework for adjusting tag behavior based on user consent signals. In its Advanced implementation, it allows Google to model conversions from non-consenting users based on patterns from consenting users. Since March 2024, it's required for EU DMA compliance if you're using Google Ads. If you're running Google Ads to European users, you need it.

11. How many events should I be tracking in GA4?

Less than most people think. Start with: page_view (automatic), session_start (automatic), key conversion events (purchase, lead, sign_up), and a handful of engagement events (scroll, video play, file download). Tracking everything creates noise. Focus on events that inform decisions.

12. What is a data layer and do I need one?

The data layer is a JavaScript object that makes website data available to GTM. Without it, GTM can only track things visible on the page (clicks, page URLs, text). With it, GTM can access server-side data like transaction IDs, product names, user IDs, and order values. You need a data layer for any eCommerce tracking or user-level data.

13. Why are my Meta ad conversions much lower than actual sales?

iOS 14+ blocks the browser pixel for a significant portion of iPhone users, and ad blockers reduce visibility further. Without Conversion API (CAPI) set up server-side, you're missing 30-50% of conversions. Setting up CAPI with deduplication and enabling Aggregated Event Measurement typically recovers most of this data.

14. How long does it take for tracking changes to show up in reports?

GA4 real-time reports: within seconds. Standard reports: data is typically available within 24-48 hours. Google Ads attribution: conversion data from GA4 imports can take up to 3 days to fully appear. Facebook Events Manager: usually within a few hours for browser events.

15. Can I track across multiple domains?

Yes. GA4 supports cross-domain measurement natively. You configure it in Admin, Data Streams, Configure tag settings, Configure your domains. GTM also needs to be present on all domains. The key goal is ensuring a single user session is maintained when a visitor moves from your main site to your checkout domain.

16. Why is my direct traffic so high?

High direct traffic (over 20% of sessions) usually indicates one of: campaigns missing UTM parameters, cross-domain traffic being misattributed, HTTPS to HTTP transitions dropping referrer information, or bot traffic. The most common culprit is internal traffic from your own team's browsers that hasn't been filtered.

17. Should I use Google Tag Manager or hardcoded tags?

GTM for almost everything. It allows non-developers to add and modify tags without code deploys, provides built-in version control and rollback, enables consent-based tag blocking, and centralizes all third-party scripts. The only exception is when a specific tag performs better hardcoded for page speed optimization.

18. What happens to my data if I switch analytics platforms?

Your historical data stays in the old platform. You cannot migrate GA4 historical data to a new tool or vice versa. This is one reason to export critical data to BigQuery before making major platform changes. Most businesses maintain read access to their old analytics accounts for at least 24 months after switching.

19. How do I track phone call conversions?

Three options: Google Ads auto-detected phone call clicks (tracks clicks on your phone number, not actual calls), Google forwarding numbers (shows a unique number to each user, tracks calls that connect), or a third-party call tracking platform like CallRail that integrates with both GA4 and Google Ads.

20. What's the most important thing to get right in tracking?

Your primary conversion event. Everything else -- bidding strategies, attribution, reporting -- depends on your key conversion being tracked accurately, without duplication, and with the correct value when applicable. If one thing is worth doing perfectly, it's this.
