Server Side Google Tag Manager

Server side Google Tag Manager (sGTM) extends GTM's capabilities beyond the browser into your own cloud infrastructure. The server-side GTM container acts as a proxy between your website and the advertising and analytics platforms you send data to — receiving events from your client-side GTM container, processing and enriching them, and forwarding the data to each destination platform using server-to-server calls rather than browser-based pixel fires. This architecture fundamentally improves tracking in three ways: ad blockers cannot intercept server-to-server calls; browser privacy features that limit cookie storage and cross-site data sharing do not apply to server-side operations; and you can enrich event data with CRM, inventory, or attribution data that is not available in the browser before forwarding to your advertising platforms. Setting up server side Google Tag Manager requires provisioning a cloud server environment, deploying the sGTM container image, configuring a first-party custom domain (e.g. collect.yourdomain.com) for client-to-server routing, setting up the client-side GTM Stape or standard transport configuration to route events to the sGTM endpoint, and building the server-side container with appropriate clients (to receive events), tags (to forward to destinations), and transformations (to process, enrich, or redact data in transit).
