Promotion and Coupon Code Tracking in GA4 Ecommerce
Promotion and Coupon Tracking in GA4

๐Introduction
A multi-category online retailer was running promotions and discount codes heavily but had no way to measure whether promotions were driving incremental sales or simply discounting orders that would have happened anyway.
โThe Problem
The marketing team was spending 18% of revenue on promotions with no measurement framework to evaluate ROI. Some promotions ran for weeks based on 'gut feel' performance. There was no GA4 data on promotion click-through rates or coupon code impact on conversion rate.
๐Identifying the Causes
The standard GA4 ecommerce implementation was not sending promotion-related events (view_promotion, select_promotion) or including the coupon parameter in purchase events. Coupon codes were not being captured in the data layer at checkout.
โ ๏ธConsequences for the Business
The business was running promotions that cost real margin without understanding if they were generating incremental orders. Analysis later showed that 3 of their 5 regular promotions had negative ROI when accounting for orders that would have occurred at full price.
โ Solution
Implemented view_promotion and select_promotion events tied to homepage banners and category page callouts. Added the coupon parameter to all checkout events and the purchase event. Built a Looker Studio report showing revenue with coupon vs without, AOV impact of each discount code, and promotion click-to-purchase attribution.
๐Results
Analysis revealed that the site-wide 15% discount code had a 12% incremental lift rate (only 12% of orders were truly incremental). The 'free gift with purchase' promotion had a 67% incremental lift rate at half the cost. Promotion strategy was restructured saving an estimated $95K annually in discount cost.
๐Conclusion
Promotion measurement in GA4 is essential for any brand investing in discounting. The coupon parameter and promotion events together create a complete picture of true promotional ROI.
๐กKey Takeaways
Always capture coupon codes in the purchase event data layer. Incremental lift analysis (orders with promo vs without at similar traffic levels) gives true ROI. 'Free gift' and 'threshold shipping' promotions typically outperform percentage discounts on incrementality.
