Interactive Filtering in Looker Studio
Static dashboards show the same view to everyone. Interactive filters let each viewer drill into the data that matters to them — by channel, campaign, country, device, or any other dimension. This turns a report into an analytical tool rather than just a snapshot.
Filter Controls vs. Chart-Level Filters
There are two distinct types of filtering in Looker Studio:
- Filter controls (interactive): UI elements viewers can use to change what data is displayed. Added from Insert menu. Examples: dropdown list, search box, date range control, slider.
- Chart-level filters (static): Filters applied permanently in chart settings that limit data regardless of what viewers do. Used to exclude spam traffic, focus on specific segments, etc.
Adding a Dropdown Filter Control
- Insert → Filter control → Dropdown list
- Set the data source and the dimension the dropdown controls (e.g., "Session default channel group")
- By default, the filter applies to all charts on the page that use the same data source
- Optionally restrict the filter to specific charts by selecting those charts and linking them to the control
Cross-Page Filters
Filter controls only affect the page they're placed on. If you want the same filter to work across multiple pages (e.g., a country filter that persists when you navigate between report pages), you need to add the filter control to each page individually. Link them to the same URL parameter to sync selections across pages.
Building Segment Comparisons
For audience segment comparisons in GA4, use the native GA4 connector's "Comparisons" feature. This lets you define two audience segments and compare their metrics side by side — for example, new users vs. returning users, or mobile vs. desktop.
Static Filters for Data Quality
Apply permanent chart-level filters to remove known data quality issues: exclude internal IP traffic, filter out bot sessions, or limit to specific countries. These filters should be set in chart properties so viewers cannot accidentally remove them.
For reliable filtering to work correctly, the underlying GA4 implementation must be sending clean, consistent dimension values. Our Looker Studio service includes a data quality review as part of every dashboard build.
