What Executives Actually Need from Dashboards

Executive dashboards fail when they try to be everything to everyone. A CMO doesn't need to see keyword-level Quality Scores or page-level bounce rates — they need to know: Are we hitting revenue targets? Is marketing spend generating positive returns? Where are the biggest opportunities or risks? Design backward from these questions.

The One-Page Summary View

The first page of an executive dashboard should fit on one screen with no scrolling. Structure it as:

  • Top row — 4 scorecards: Total Revenue, Marketing Spend, ROAS, Total Conversions — all with prior period comparison
  • Middle row — two charts: Revenue trend over time (time series) + Channel performance (bar chart showing revenue by channel)
  • Bottom row — one table: Campaign or initiative performance with spend, conversions, and CPA — sorted by spend descending

Every metric on this page should directly connect to business outcomes, not platform-specific vanity metrics.

Connecting Revenue to Marketing

The most valuable metric in an executive dashboard is revenue attributed to marketing. This requires:

  1. Proper GA4 ecommerce tracking or CRM revenue data
  2. Consistent UTM parameters on all paid campaigns
  3. Agreed attribution model (GA4 data-driven, last-click, or first-click)

Without these in place, the dashboard will show proxy metrics (conversions, leads) rather than actual revenue impact.

Red/Amber/Green Status Indicators

Use Looker Studio's conditional formatting to create RAG status indicators. Set thresholds: ROAS above 4.0 = green, 2.0-4.0 = amber, below 2.0 = red. These make the performance status immediately visible without the executive having to interpret numbers.

Keeping It Minimal

Every chart on an executive dashboard should be there because it answers a specific question an executive would ask. If you can't articulate what question a chart answers, remove it. Three highly relevant charts are worth more than fifteen marginally relevant ones.
