Using Google Sheets as a Looker Studio Data Source

Using Google Sheets as a Looker Studio Data Source

Why Use Google Sheets as a Data Source?

Google Sheets is the most flexible data source in Looker Studio. It handles data that doesn't have a native connector — manual CRM exports, offline conversion data, budget tracking spreadsheets, or any third-party platform data that you export to CSV and paste into Sheets. If data exists somewhere and can be exported, Sheets is often the bridge to Looker Studio.

Setting Up the Connection

  1. In Looker Studio, add a data source and search for "Google Sheets"
  2. Select the spreadsheet and the specific worksheet tab to use as the data source
  3. Looker Studio reads the first row as column headers and each subsequent row as a data record
  4. Optionally check "Use first row as headers" if your sheet has headers in row 1

The key requirement: your Google Sheet must be a clean, flat data table — one row per record, consistent column names, no merged cells, no summary rows mixed with data rows. Any formatting that makes sense visually in a spreadsheet usually breaks a Looker Studio data source.

Best Practices for Sheets Data Sources

  • Keep a dedicated "data" tab separate from any "summary" or "formatted" tabs
  • Use date columns formatted as YYYY-MM-DD for reliable date dimension recognition
  • Use consistent naming for dimension values — "Organic Search" and "organic search" and "Organic search" are treated as three different values
  • Avoid blank rows — they create empty records in Looker Studio

Refreshing Data from Third-Party APIs

For platforms without native Looker Studio connectors (LinkedIn Ads, TikTok, Twitter/X), one approach is to use Google Apps Script to pull API data into a Google Sheet on a schedule (hourly, daily), then connect Looker Studio to that Sheet. The dashboard stays current without requiring a paid third-party connector.

The trade-off: Apps Script setup requires coding and maintenance. Paid connectors like Supermetrics handle the API maintenance for you.

Blending Sheets Data with Other Sources

Combine Sheets data with native connector data using Looker Studio's blend feature. A common example: blend a Google Sheet containing offline revenue data with GA4 session data on date and channel to get a complete revenue picture that includes both online and offline conversions.

Our Looker Studio service designs data pipelines that feed into Sheets when native connectors aren't available, keeping dashboards current without manual exports.
