Date Controls in Looker Studio
One of the most important features in any marketing dashboard is the ability to compare performance across time periods. Looker Studio has built-in date range controls and comparison features that make period-over-period analysis straightforward — if you know how to set them up correctly.
Adding a Date Range Control
From the Insert menu, select "Date range control." Place it at the top of your report page. When a viewer changes the date range using this control, every chart on that page updates automatically to show data for the selected period. This is far more useful than hardcoding date ranges into individual charts.
Set a default date range for the control — "Last 30 days" or "Last 90 days" works for most marketing dashboards. Viewers can then adjust as needed without the report owner having to rebuild anything.
Period-over-Period Comparisons
Looker Studio supports comparison date ranges natively. When editing a chart, look for the "Comparison date range" option in the data settings panel. Options include:
- Previous period: Compares to the same length period immediately before the selected range
- Previous year: Compares to the same dates in the prior year (best for seasonal businesses)
- Custom date range: Compare to any specific period you define
Scorecards automatically show the percentage change when comparison is enabled — a green up-arrow for improvement, red down-arrow for decline.
Linking Date Controls to Specific Charts
By default, a date range control affects all charts that use the same data source on that page. If you want a control to only affect certain charts, you can set chart-level date ranges independently. Right-click on a chart, go to chart properties, and set a fixed or custom date range that ignores the page-level control.
Auto-Date Ranges for Exec Dashboards
For executive dashboards that should always show current performance, set the date range to "This month" or "Last 7 days" at the chart level. This ensures the dashboard always reflects current performance regardless of what date control viewers have selected.
Building a well-structured time-based dashboard requires good data from GA4 and Google Ads. Our Looker Studio service handles the full setup from data source configuration through to final dashboard delivery.
