Copy Testing: How Words Move Conversion Rates

Words Are the Highest-Leverage CRO Variable

Most CRO programs test layout changes, color changes, and UX redesigns. These produce modest, consistent wins — typically 5–20% conversion lift per winning test.

Copy tests — testing different headlines, value propositions, CTA text, and persuasion approaches — are higher-variance but frequently produce the largest wins. A headline that speaks directly to the user's specific fear or desire can double conversion rates in a single test.

Our CRO team runs copy tests as a dedicated stream alongside UX tests.

What to Test: A Priority Hierarchy

1. The Primary Headline (Highest Impact)

The headline is read first and determines whether users engage with the rest of the page. A headline rewrite is the single highest-impact copy test you can run.

Approaches to test:

  • Benefit-focused vs. feature-focused ("Save 5 hours per week" vs. "Automated time tracking")
  • Outcome-focused vs. process-focused ("Get more clients" vs. "A system for consistent lead generation")
  • Problem-focused vs. solution-focused ("Tired of losing customers to slow response times?" vs. "Respond to every lead within 60 seconds")
  • Specific vs. general ("152 clients added in 90 days" vs. "Measurable results for growing agencies")

2. CTA Button Text

CTA copy tests are quick to implement and often highly impactful:

  • First-person vs. second-person: "Start My Free Trial" vs. "Start Your Free Trial" — first-person often wins
  • Value-forward vs. action-forward: "Get My Free Report" vs. "Download Now"
  • Specific vs. generic: "Book a 15-Minute Strategy Call" vs. "Get in Touch"
  • With risk reversal: "Start Free Trial — No Credit Card Required" vs. "Start Free Trial"

3. Value Proposition Bullets

Feature bullets vs. benefit bullets vs. customer outcome bullets perform very differently. Test:

  • "Real-time analytics dashboard" (feature) vs. "Know where every pound of ad spend is going" (benefit)
  • Order of bullets — most important benefit first
  • Bullet quantity — 3 vs. 5 vs. 7 bullets

4. Social Proof Copy

  • Specific number vs. approximate: "Join 12,347 businesses" vs. "Join 12,000+ businesses"
  • Customer quote with specific result vs. general praise
  • Review source callout: "★★★★★ on Google" vs. just showing stars

Where to Find Winning Copy Ideas

The best copy tests aren't written from scratch — they're drawn from real customer language:

  • Review mining: Read your 5-star reviews for the language customers use to describe the benefit. These are often better headlines than anything a copywriter invents.
  • Support ticket analysis: The most common questions reveal what's unclear on your page — and the language customers use to describe confusion.
  • Sales call recordings: What questions do prospects ask? What objections do they raise? What language resonates when reps address concerns?
  • Survey responses: Exit survey open-text responses often contain the exact phrases users use to describe what stopped them — and what would have changed their decision.

Measuring Copy Tests Correctly

Copy tests in isolation (changing only text) make it easy to attribute results to the change. But require same statistical discipline as any A/B test — run to required sample size, don't stop early when you see movement.

Track conversions in GA4 and ensure the A/B testing tool is integrated with GA4 audiences if you want to analyze converting users in GA4. Contact our CRO team to develop and execute a copy testing program.
