The CRO Analytics Stack: Tools for a Complete Optimization Program

Building a CRO Stack: Tools for Each Job

An effective CRO programme needs tools that cover both quantitative and qualitative data, and tools for implementing and testing changes. Trying to do everything with one tool limits the depth of insight you can generate. This guide outlines the recommended tool category for each CRO function and the most common choices.

Quantitative Analytics

Primary tool: Google Analytics 4

GA4 provides the quantitative foundation: conversion rates, funnel completion rates, user flows, segment analysis, and traffic attribution. The free tier handles most CRO analysis needs. Implemented correctly via Google Tag Manager, GA4 provides the data for identifying where to investigate and for measuring whether tests worked.

Heatmaps and Session Recording

Free: Microsoft Clarity — heatmaps, session recordings, rage click and dead click detection. No data limits. Adequate for most small-to-mid-size sites.

Paid: Hotjar — more polished UI, form analytics, and on-page survey integration. Good for teams doing frequent CRO analysis.

Enterprise: FullStory or LogRocket — advanced search across sessions, DX data metrics, integration with product analytics and support tools.

A/B Testing

Entry: Google Optimize replacements — Optimizely (full-featured), VWO (strong mid-market option), or Convert.com (privacy-focused).

Feature flags + experiments: LaunchDarkly or Split.io — for teams running product experiments rather than just marketing page tests.

User Feedback

Surveys and user feedback fill the "why" gap that quantitative tools can't answer. Hotjar Surveys, Delighted (NPS), or Typeform embedded on specific pages. Triggered by exit intent or after specific actions for maximum relevance.

Putting It Together

The CRO workflow: GA4 identifies the where (which funnel steps have poor conversion) → Heatmaps identify the what (which elements are failing) → Session recordings identify the why (what friction users actually experience) → Hypothesis development → A/B test → GA4 measures the result.
