Brand Analytics: Measuring Brand Health with Data

Why Brand Analytics Is Difficult (and Important)

Brand marketing generates value that appears in business outcomes months or years after the investment — improved conversion rates, lower CAC as organic and direct traffic grow, better LTV as customers choose you based on preference rather than price. This lag between investment and measurable outcome makes brand analytics fundamentally different from performance marketing analytics, and requires different measurement approaches.

Branded Search Volume: The Proxy for Brand Awareness

The most readily available brand metric is branded search volume — how many people are searching for your brand name on Google. This data is available in Google Search Console for your own brand and directionally via Google Trends. Growing branded search volume indicates growing brand awareness. Compare branded search growth against the overall category search volume to calculate share of search.

Brand Lift Studies

Google and Meta both offer Brand Lift Studies — surveys run to users who were and weren't exposed to your advertising, measuring changes in:

  • Ad recall
  • Brand awareness (unaided and aided)
  • Brand favourability
  • Purchase intent

Brand Lift Studies require significant ad spend to generate statistically significant sample sizes (typically $50K+ per study). The results quantify how much your advertising shifted brand perception — useful for justifying brand investment to CFOs.

Share of Voice

Share of Voice (SOV) in paid search is available in Google Ads Auction Insights as Impression Share. In organic search, SOV is calculated as your total organic clicks / total category search volume from Search Console. Growing SOV indicates brand strength growing faster than the overall category — historically a reliable predictor of market share growth.

Direct Traffic as a Brand Signal

Users typing your URL directly or clicking bookmarks signal strong brand recognition. Direct traffic trends in GA4 are a proxy for brand loyalty and top-of-mind awareness. Our marketing analytics consulting service includes brand analytics frameworks for organisations investing in brand-building campaigns.
