Omnichannel Retail CDP: Connecting Online and Offline Data

The Omnichannel Data Challenge in Retail

A retail customer who browses online, visits the store, and then purchases online over a 3-week journey looks like three separate people to most retail data systems: an anonymous web cookie, an untracked store visitor, and an identified online purchaser. The CDP's job in retail is to stitch these touchpoints into one profile and make that profile available for personalisation and marketing across every channel.

Online Data Sources

  • Ecommerce website: Browse events, search queries, add-to-cart, purchase — captured via CDP JavaScript SDK
  • Mobile app: App sessions, product views, wishlist actions — captured via CDP mobile SDK
  • Email: Opens, clicks, conversion from email — captured via ESP webhook to CDP
  • Loyalty programme (digital): Points redemption, tier changes, referrals

Offline Data Sources

  • POS transactions: In-store purchases, receipts, return transactions — connected via CDP server-side API or cloud source
  • Loyalty card swipes: In-store loyalty scans provide the identity link between online and offline (the loyalty email matches the known user)
  • Call centre interactions: Customer service calls, complaints, resolutions — from CRM or contact centre software

The Identity Bridge

The critical link between online and offline is the loyalty programme. When a customer swipes their loyalty card in-store, that event includes their loyalty email — which the CDP can match to their online profile. Without a loyalty programme or similar identifier, connecting online browsers to in-store buyers requires probabilistic matching (higher risk of false links).

Encourage loyalty programme enrolment at POS. Design the loyalty signup flow to capture email and link it to online accounts. This is the data strategy foundation that makes omnichannel personalisation possible.

Activation from Unified Profiles

With unified online and offline profiles, personalisation becomes genuinely cross-channel: show online ads featuring the product category they browsed in store last week, send email with the winter coats they tried on but didn't buy, send personalised offers to customers who haven't visited a store in 60 days.
