Google Ads Shopping Campaigns: Setup and Optimization Guide for Ecommerce

Why Google Shopping Is the Engine of Ecommerce PPC

Google Shopping campaigns consistently deliver lower CPCs, higher conversion rates, and better ROAS than standard text ads for most ecommerce businesses. Instead of bidding on keywords, you submit a product feed and Google matches your products to relevant searches automatically.

The visual nature of Shopping ads — showing product image, price, store name, and reviews — helps pre-qualify buyers. Users who click a Shopping ad already know the product and price, making them much closer to purchasing than users who click a generic text ad.

Prerequisites: Product Feed and Google Merchant Center

Shopping campaigns are powered by your Google Merchant Center product feed. Before creating your first Shopping campaign, you need:

  1. Google Merchant Center account — where your product feed lives
  2. Approved product feed — all required attributes (id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability, condition, brand) filled in correctly
  3. Merchant Center linked to Google Ads
  4. Product data quality — no disapproved products, accurate pricing, matching prices between feed and website

Feed quality is the #1 factor in Shopping campaign performance. A weak feed with generic titles and missing attributes will get fewer impressions and lower quality placements.

Standard Shopping vs. Performance Max for Ecommerce

Today you have two options for Shopping:

  • Standard Shopping: Manual control over product groups, bids, and negative keywords. More transparent reporting. Recommended for accounts that want granular control.
  • Performance Max with Shopping feed: AI-driven across all Google inventory including Shopping. Higher reach but less control and less transparency.

Our recommendation: run Standard Shopping for your core product catalog (especially best-sellers) and test PMax for broader reach and new customer acquisition.

Campaign Structure for Shopping

Separate Brand vs. Generic Queries

Shopping ads don't use traditional keyword targeting, but you can use priority settings and negative keywords to control which campaign captures which type of traffic:

  • High Priority campaign: Catches all queries first (add negatives for branded terms)
  • Medium Priority campaign: Catches remaining generic queries
  • Low Priority campaign: Catches branded queries with higher bids

Product Group Segmentation

Subdivide products by category, brand, product type, or custom labels (which you define in your feed). This allows different bids for:

  • High-margin products → higher bids
  • Best-sellers with proven ROAS → higher bids
  • New/unproven products → lower bids while gathering data
  • Low-margin clearance items → lower bids

Feed Optimization: The Hidden Lever

Your product feed directly determines when your Shopping ads are shown. Optimize:

  • Product titles: Include primary keyword at the beginning (Brand + Key Feature + Product Type + Size/Color)
  • Product descriptions: Rich, keyword-included descriptions of 500+ characters
  • Custom labels: Add data like "high margin," "seasonal," "bestseller" to enable bid segmentation
  • Product type: Full category hierarchy helps Google understand and match your products
  • GTIN/MPN: Providing these improves match quality significantly

Bidding Strategy for Shopping

Start with Target ROAS once you have enough conversion data (50+ purchases/month per campaign). Before that:

  • New campaigns: Maximize Clicks with a bid cap to gather data
  • Growing campaigns (20–50 conversions/month): Maximize Conversion Value
  • Established campaigns (50+ conversions/month): Target ROAS

Shopping Conversion Tracking Requirements

Shopping campaigns require ecommerce-specific conversion tracking: dynamic conversion values (actual purchase amounts) rather than static values. This requires proper enhanced ecommerce tracking setup in GA4 and/or direct Google Ads purchase event tracking.

Without dynamic values, your tROAS bidding has no revenue data to optimize against — it's flying blind. Our Google Ads tracking setup service includes ecommerce conversion value configuration as standard. If your current tracking has issues, our conversion tracking fix service addresses them.
