SEO Reporting with Looker Studio and Search Console
Google Search Console is the most reliable source of organic search data — it shows exactly what queries drove clicks to your site, which pages rank, and how position changes affect traffic. Looker Studio connects natively to Search Console and lets you build SEO dashboards that are far more flexible than Search Console's built-in reports.
Setting Up the Search Console Connection
In Looker Studio, add a data source and select "Search Console." Choose your property and select either "Site Impression" (site-level data) or "URL Impression" (page-level data). For most SEO dashboards, you'll want both — create two separate data sources for site and URL impression data, then use them in different pages of your report.
Key Metrics to Track
- Total clicks: Actual organic visits from Google — the most direct traffic metric
- Total impressions: How many times your pages appeared in search results
- Average CTR: Clicks / Impressions — indicates whether your titles and meta descriptions are compelling
- Average position: Mean ranking position across all queries — trend over time shows whether rankings are improving
Page-Level SEO Performance
Build a table using URL Impression data with these columns: Landing Page, Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Average Position. Sort by Clicks descending to see your highest-traffic organic pages. Add a date comparison to see which pages gained or lost traffic period-over-period.
This view immediately shows which content is working and which pages have high impressions but low CTR (indicating a title/description optimization opportunity).
Query Analysis
Using Site Impression data, build a table with Query in rows and Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Position in columns. Filter to show only queries where Position is between 5 and 20 — these are your "quick win" ranking opportunities where you have some visibility but aren't yet in top positions.
Blending with GA4
Blend Search Console URL data with GA4 page data on landing page URL to see both the search performance (clicks, position) and the on-site behavior (time on page, conversion rate) for each page. High-ranking pages with low conversion rates are conversion optimization opportunities. Our Looker Studio service builds SEO dashboards with this blended view as a standard component.
